It takes a community to raise a child but we need to see the child first. ChildSoldier.ca is an information feed and staging point for community building projects that work towards eradicating poverty and the use of children in conflict. I’m building awareness and need your help to speak out about child soldiers through your network. There are plenty of resources, videos and projects on this site to draw from and we encourage you to share them with your friends and family. Join us on facebook or twitter and get involved at any level. I ask that you join and support a growing global community that is determined to end the use of about 300,000 child soldiers in 30 countries around the world.

Watch this TEDxIsfeld talk I did in 2011 to see why I am involved in this project.

ChildSoldier.ca supports many NGOs working towards the goal that fulfill the mandate to:

  1. build an empathic, healthy, and educated global community,
  2. stop recruitment and the use of children in conflict,
  3. rehabilitate, educate and care for children affected by conflict,
  4. strengthen child protection policies in every country,
  5. disarm and demobilize child soldiers in the field.

The HEAL Project – ChildSoldier.ca

In addition to the news feed and awareness building ChildSoldier.ca is working on The HEAL Project.

The HEAL Project raises awareness and funds for of two leading NGOs in Canada that work to aid conflict affected children around the world. The proliferation of small arms such as hand guns and select automatic weapons have made it possible for children as young as 8 to be used as advanced weapon systems in 30 countries. The fact that children are even considered as soldiers, or tools of conflict is wrong. In the wake of conflict thousands of children are left destitute, traumatized and helpless. We can make a difference in the lives of children and ourselves.

To achieve the short-term and long-term goals of this mandate, funds raised by The HEAL Project will support Romeo Dallaire’s new Child Soldiers Initiative and War Child Canada.

If you would like to make a donation to this initiative, tax receipts are available for Canadian donations over $10. More information and secure, direct donation links are available on the official site.

HugPile – ChildSoldier.ca

This is a fun initiative created by ChildSoldier.ca that can be found at HugPile.com

Gather the people around you and hug them for 30 seconds. This is what a healthy community feels like. Hugpiles are a great way to introduce emotionally difficult concepts like child soldiering, human exploitation, and human trafficking. Have a big hug and discuss what actions you will take to create a better community together. A united community is connected and secure. The weakest person is held up and the strongest is relieved of the burden to hold everyone up; most importantly though, everyone is important in a Hugpile and nobody can be left out. Show your support for the people of this planet that are invisible to the community. It takes a community to raise a child but we need to see the child first. Send in your 30-second hugpile high-resolution photo with details about your location and how many people participated. Creating a community starts with accepting, loving, and supporting the people around you. Let’s get started. Click here to see some hugs.
